We had a very successful meeting last Wednesday night with the planning commission regarding our land use permit and building design review. The commission was very positive toward our upcoming building development.
There was one portion of one of the conditions of approval that we had some concerns about that was tabled until a following meeting in order to give the city time to acquire more information. This will be taken up for a rehearing and final decision coming up on May 30th. Keep praying.
What? A Combined Planning Commission & Design Review Hearing
When? Wednesday Night, 6:30 PM, City of Beaverton
Please join with us in praying for favor with the city. Our prayer is that we can mutually agree with city staff on the conditions of approval and design review. An approval would mean that we could immediately apply for building permits and break ground soon.
This is a recording of the event that took place on Sunday, December 3rd. Todd Tarbert from Semble explains the opportunity to fund the Next Step Project with investments. If you missed the presentation or simply want to see it again, please watch the video below.
One of the most Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.) that we have been getting is, "Why are we putting the new building there?" There are several reasons for the chosen location.
1. One of the goals of The Next Step Building Project is to provide a safe and secure home for all SWKIDS ministries and programs. A safe and secure building also needs to be welcoming and convenient. This requires it to be attached to the current building through the main lobby. This allows a separate, secure building to feel like a natural expansion of our current campus. This requirement alone makes the current build location the logical choice.
2. By expanding off of the current coffee corner, a new "Family Entrance" is created that allows families to park close to the building and to enter the building in the correct programming order. The first stop is the check-in stations and restrooms. The second stop is babies and toddlers. Heading up the stairs to the main lobby level allows drop off of grade school kids followed by coffee and the main auditorium.
3. The building does appear to stick out further than the current building. 38 parking spots will be lost to the new building. The main reason the building sits forward is to keep it from encroaching on the future expansion of the auditorium. The auditorium was constructed so that the west wall is not load-bearing. This allows for the auditorium to double in size someday, if the need ever arises. We don't foresee that in the near future, but we did not want to place the building in a location that would stop this expansion from happening someday.
4. The current build location allows us to keep much of the West Lawn that is used for weddings, receptions and outdoor gatherings. This is a valuable space that we will continue to enjoy for years to come.
Last Sunday we celebrated what God did over the Summer through the SWKIDS summer ministry, focusing on the first summer of Adventure Camp. We heard stories from the lives of the kids, their families and our staff. We also gave an update on The Next Step building expansion and improvement project. We presented the latest building concepts and features. If you missed the presentation last Sunday, you can watch it now online!
